Het Beroepenhuis from Ghent to Europe with Erasmus

Author: Het Beroepenhuis & Euroguidance Flanders (Belgium)

The educational centre, Het Beroepenhuis, provides an all-round experience on talents and professions in Flanders. Every year it reaches over 30,000 young people through three programmes:

1) Educational activities for schools and families,

2) Project-based outreach across Flanders

3) Future-oriented, European projects

Educational activities

The organisation offers class visits for primary and secondary schools. Pupils experience various professions in talent workshops and an interactive exposition, and they map their talents. Educational staff supports these activities, including (pre- and post-) classes and group conversations.

Project-based outreach

Het Beroepenhuis also offers a talent quest for families and a  Creaclub STEM-academy on Wednesday afternoons. Teachers and parents can visit the organisation’s library, which contains many educational materials supporting the study choice process, such as a talent map, a classroom game and information on educational choices. Throughout Flanders, Het Beroepenhuis also runs project-based activities and events to support young people in the discovery of talents and professions. Examples include ‘Do Day’, ‘Talent Month’, ‘Profession Rally’s’, ‘Profession villages’ and ‘Technology Festival’

Future oriented European Projects

The future-oriented programme is the third and highly important programme. Het Beroepenhuis is now future-proofing its work with two exciting European projects:

Alpha Skills

With the Alpha Skills project, Het Beroepenhuis and its partners develop new tools and methodologies to educate teachers, educators and youth workers about career guidance, talent, and skill development in the green economy.
The partnership organises local and international cocreation workshops and training sessions in which they develop educational materials together with the target group, youngsters aged 13-15 years.  Het Beroepenhuis has now created an advanced educational installation on solar energy. ‘Sun Energy Lab’ and an intriguing serious game about organising a sustainable festival: ‘Fest it Up’. All materials are tested in each partner country and collected in an online guidebook.

Alpha Skills supports youngsters in making better informed and motivated choices in their future education and career path, as they gain clearer ideas about their talents, interests, skills and opportunities.

TATOE: own your study career

TATOE (‘TalentenAtelier van de TOEkomst’) is an Interactive project that aims to familiarise young people between 12-18 years with career thinking. The project will support young people to gain ownership of their educational and professional career. The aim is to match their career with who they are and so they will stay motivated in their career pathway. Young people should be capable of making solid choices. This requires knowledge about the needs and demands of our society, as well as self-knowledge, horizon expansion, decision-making skills and motivations. TATOE has got a strong focus on these. Talent and interest discovery are lifelong processes, during which external support is crucial. TATOE covers three contexts: education, leisure time and the home environment. This approach will maximise the opportunities young people will have to discover their talents, interests and motivations.

The partnership will develop:

  • a profession-exploring workshop,
  • a track that guides young people to suitable training or work
  • professionalisation that strengthens the young people's context (for teachers, mentors, parents)
