the study Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania were candidate countries
to the Schengen Area. Of non-EU states, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland
and Liechtenstein have joined the Schengen Area.
Third-country Migrants coming from countries outside the EU and not holding the
nationals citizenship of an EU country. This group includes both persons born in a
country outside the EU and persons born in the EU but not holding the
citizenship of a Member State.
NB: This list of definitions follows closely Eurostat and European Commission criteria.
