“AI-Compass” (A card-based tool for critical reflection on Artificial Intelligence in education and career guidance)
The "AI-Compass" ("KI-Kompass") is a card-based reflection and discussion tool, which enables structured discussions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of education, training and career guidance.
The tool consists of 36 cards grouped into four thematic categories:
- Opportunities (e.g. efficiency, new possibilities for career guidance, support in teaching and learning),
- Risks (e.g. bias, loss of autonomy, data protection issues),
- Perspectives (e.g. ethical implications, the role of humans, societal change),
- Examples (practical use cases of AI in education and guidance).
Practitioners (such as guidance practitioners, teachers, HR staff) can use the AI-Compass in workshops, team discussions or training settings to critically reflect on the potentials and limitations of AI.
The cards are designed to promote dialogue, raise awareness and support informed decision-making regarding the integration of AI into career guidance and educational contexts.
The open-source material is available online for free as download (also in English) and can be printed individually or professionally.
It can be “played” by 3-5 people at once (minimum age recommended: 12 years) and takes about 20-40 minutes to play.
The practice encourages participatory learning, cooperation and interdisciplinary perspectives on AI.
AI Compass is the result of the project “Künstliche Intelligenz, menschlich erklärt” (Artificial intelligence, explained in human terms), which was developed through a collaboration between the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and the non-profit organisation “neuland & gestalten”, and implemented by the “Büro für Sinn und Unsinn”. The research project took a transdisciplinary approach, working with citizens and experts to develop explanatory models that provide access to knowledge on the subject of artificial intelligence (AI).
