A Platform for Young Athletes to Shape Their Future

How can young athletes successfully combine their education with a demanding sports career? The Talent Day Central Switzerland provides answers. Created in 2021 as a legacy project of the Winter Universiade, this annual event helps Swiss youth navigate the challenges of pursuing both education and elite sports. Supported by the Education Directors of Central Switzerland, it brings together key stakeholders in education, sports, and career guidance to offer practical solutions and networking opportunities.

Key Goals of the Talent Day

The Talent Day Central Switzerland is not just an informational event—it is a strategic initiative designed to support young athletes at a crucial stage in their education. The event has three main objectives:

  1. Guidance for athletes and parents – Providing young athletes and their families with essential insights into how they can successfully balance sports and education after compulsory schooling.
  2. Collaboration between key stakeholders – Showcasing developments in cooperation between career guidance services, sports departments, vocational training oversight bodies, and schools to improve support structures.
  3. Creating networking opportunities – Connecting young athletes with experts in education and sports to build strong support systems.

A Strong Network for Dual Careers

Organized within the framework of the Zentralschweizer Bildungsmesse (Zebi), the Talent Day plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between sports and education. The Career Guidance and Counseling Services have established a specialized network focused on developing programs tailored to young athletes. Simultaneously, an education working group is working on improving dual career solutions at the upper secondary level, with career guidance professionals and sports experts collaborating closely.

Interactive Workshops and Expert Insights

At the 2024 Talent Day, nearly 400 students from grades 7 to 9, each accompanied by a parent, participated in workshops led by career counselors and vocational training specialists. These sessions tackled key issues, such as setting priorities between sports and education and planning for life beyond an athletic career. In addition, a dedicated information area featured representatives from schools, vocational training authorities, sports departments, and career guidance services, providing tailored advice.

One of the highlights was the talk given by Pascal Loretz, goalkeeper of FC Luzern, who shared his experience of managing both professional sports and education. His message was clear: determination and planning are key to successfully balancing both worlds.

A Valuable Initiative for Career Guidance Services

For career guidance services, the Talent Day offers significant benefits:

  • Social impact – Sports play a key role in society, and career counselors actively contribute to helping young talents plan their future.
  • Recognition in education and employment – Career guidance services are seen as neutral yet essential actors in advising students, sports organizations, schools, and employers.
  • Long-term career support – The event highlights that career guidance is available not just before secondary education, but also during and after an athlete’s sports career, ensuring a smooth transition to further studies or the job market.
