In Karlstad Municipality’s compulsory schools, a “Career Library” (Yrkesbiblioteket) has been developed. The Career Library is an app where all school staff can book industry representatives who can be invited into the classroom, arrange study visits, etc.

The purpose is to provide equal opportunities for school–workplace collaboration and to offer a tool for working with study and career guidance as a shared responsibility across the entire school. At the same time, it is part of the strategic skills supply work, as employers are given the opportunity to broaden students’ perspectives on different professions and industries. It gives students the chance to identify with role models in working life and to come into contact with professions they might not otherwise have the opportunity to encounter. We have also linked the library with NTA – Science and Technology for All – which we see as part of our work to realise elements of the STEM strategy.

The Career Library has been in place for about four years now, and more and more schools are beginning to see its benefits and how it can be used in connection with teaching. For employers, it is a great opportunity to come out and meet future employees, while also having the chance to be the role model that many students need.

The purpose of the Career Library is to make it easier for schools and working life to connect and collaborate. Students are given the opportunity to come into contact with professions they might not otherwise encounter, in order to broaden their perspectives and strengthen their career choice competence.
